11th Annual Family Medicine Update

The 11th Annual Family Medicine Update was held on the UAMS Campus, on October 19 and 20, 2007.  The course was offered under the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM) chairmanship of Geoffrey Goldsmith M.D., M.P.H.  Ms. Mary Lindsey, L.C.S.W. was the administrative director of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Division of the DFPM.  The DFPM Medical Directors for CME programs are Thomas Benton, M.D.; Philip Hudson, M.D.; Martha Lauster, M.D.; Ann Lewis, A.P.N.; Kent McKelvey, Jr., M.D.; and Sandy Prince, M.S., C.H.E.S.;

 The 11th Annual Family Medicine Update was reviewed and acceptable for up to 13.25 prescribed hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians and up to 13.25 hours by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.  The Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for up to 13.25 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.  The Arkansas Nursing Association designates this educational activity for 13.25 contact hours.  Three of these CME hours were offered at no charge to over 23 accepting distant sites throughout Arkansas via compressed video and 12 accepting distant sites via the Tandberg system. 

The target audience for this course continues to be Family Physicians, Internists, and Pediatricians.  However, this course is considered beneficial for Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Certified Health Education Specialists as well as other health care professionals.  This year’s Family Medicine Update attendance included 62 participants registered in Little Rock.  The overall program evaluation score was 4.42 on a 5.0 as excellent scale and the overall speaker mean score was 4.50 on a 5.0 as excellent scale. 

This was the fifth year that the DFPM offered an optional pre-conference session.   The optional pre-conference offered participants 6 of the possible 13.25 hours of CME. There were 45 participants attending the pre-conference in Little Rock on Friday.  Three presentations and question and answer sessions were offered free of charge to 35 operational distant learning sites across the state. An additional 272 participants attended the interactive portion at the 35 operational distant learning sites during the compressed video segment (for a total of 317).  The overall course evaluation for the pre-conference reflected an average score of 4.51 on a 5.0 as excellent scale and the overall speaker mean score was 4.62 on a 5.0 as excellent scale. Total attendance for the entire course was 377.

In summary, the 11th Annual Family Medicine Update was a success in reaching 377 health care professionals.

29th Annual Family Practice Intensive Review Course

The Department of Family & Preventive Medicine, Division of Continuing Medical Education held the 29th Annual Family Practice Intensive Review Course at the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute from May 31 – June 3, 2007 under the direction of Mary S. Lindsey, LCSW.  DFPM-CME’s primary goal is to offer quality CME programs to primary care providers and other health care professionals across Arkansas and has been providing continuing medical education programs for more than 18 years.  Over 18,000 health care professionals in Arkansas have been trained by DFPM-CME year to date.

 All course material and curricula were submitted and approved by the DFPM-CME Medical Directors Thomas Benton, MD; Martha Lauster, MD; Kent McKelvey, Jr, MD; Steven Strode, MD, Med, MPH; Edna Taniegra, MD; Amanda Ferstl, PharmD; Joseph J. Mitchell, RN and Sandy Prince, MS, CHES.  All programs received CME credits from the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Arkansas Nurses Association, and the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.

 The target audience for this course continues to be Family Physicians, Internists, and Pediatricians.  However, this course is considered beneficial for Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, as well as other health care professionals.  This year’s main IRC attendance included 220 participants (137 of which were physicians) on the UAMS campus.  In addition to the 220 attendees in Little Rock, there were 173 attendees for the Pre-conferences on May 31 and 401 attendees at the 35 operational distant learning sites including an additional room set up in Little Rock as an interactive site during the compressed video segment.  Total attendance for the entire conference was 794 healthcare providers.

The 29th Annual IRC was reviewed and acceptable for up to 29.25 prescribed hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians and by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.  The Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for up to 29.25 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.  The Arkansas Nursing Association designates this educational activity for 35.1 contact hours.  Four of these CME hours were offered at no charge to over 35 accepting distant sites throughout Arkansas via compressed video and the DHHS Bioterrorism network.  The overall program evaluation score was 4.63 on a 5.0 as excellent scale and the overall speaker mean score was 4.54 on a 5.0 as excellent scale.

§    137 physicians attended the IRC main conference.

§    The overall program evaluation score based on a 1-5 scale with 5.0 being excellent was 4.63.

§   The overall speaker mean score based on a 1-5 scale with 5.0 being excellent was 4.54.

§   Of the 40 speakers that presented at the 29th IRC, 36 were UAMS physicians and pharmacists.

§   In 2007, there were 27 Gold Star Members. Gold Star members are participants who have attended this program for more than 5 consecutive years.

§   In 2007, there were 9 Platinum Star Members.  Platinum Star Members are participants who have attended this program for more than 10 consecutive years

§   DPFM/CME offered 2 hours of complimentary Diabetes content.

The 10th Annual Family Medicine Update was held on the UAMS Campus, on October 6 and 7, 2006.  The course was offered under the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM) chairmanship of Geoffrey Goldsmith M.D., M.P.H.  Ms. Mary Lindsey, L.C.S.W. was the administrative director of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Division of the DFPM.  The DFPM Medical Directors for CME programs are David Bourne, M.D., M.P.H.; Elton Cleveland, M.D.; Kent McKelvey, Jr., M.D.; Steven Strode, M.D., M.Ed., M.P.H.; Marybeth Curtis, B.S.N.; and Sandy Prince, M.S., C.H.E.S.

The 10th Annual Family Medicine Update was reviewed and acceptable for up to 13.25 prescribed hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians and up to 13.25 hours by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.  The Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for up to 13.25 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.  The Arkansas Nursing Association designates this educational activity for 15 contact hours.  7.20 of these CME hours were offered at no charge to over 25 accepting distant sites throughout Arkansas via compressed video and 12 accepting distant sites via the Tandberg system for a total of 37 distant learning sites. 

The target audience for this course continues to be Family Physicians, Internists, and Pediatricians.  However, this course is considered beneficial for Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Certified Health Education Specialists as well as other health care professionals. 

This was the fourth year that the DFPM offered an optional pre-conference session.   The optional pre-conference offered participants 6 of the possible 13.25 hours of CME. There were 57 participants attending the Friday pre-conference in Little Rock and an additional 678 participants attended the interactive portion free of charge at the 37 operational distant learning sites (for a total of 735).  The overall course evaluation for the distant pre-conference sites reflected an average score of 3.52 on a 4.0 as excellent scale.  The overall course evaluation for participants in the Little Rock area reflected an average score of 3.75 on a 4.0 excellent scale.  The combined overall course average for the pre-conference reflected an average score of 3.59.

This year’s Family Medicine Update Saturday attendance included 50 participants registered in Little Rock.  The overall program evaluation score for Saturday was 3.73 on a 4.0 as excellent scale and the overall speaker mean score was 4.67 on a 5.0 as excellent scale. 

The 10th Annual Family Medicine Update overall speaker mean score was 4.59 on a 5.0 as excellent scale. The overall program evaluation score for both days reflected 3.62 on a 4.0 excellent scaleTotal attendance for the entire course was 785.


The 28th Annual Family Practice Intensive Review Course (IRC) was held on the UAMS Campus, from June 1 through 4, 2006.  This year represents the 16th year the IRC will be offered under the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM) chairmanship of Geoffrey Goldsmith M.D., M.P.H.  This year also marks the 16th anniversary of Ms. Mary Lindsey, MSW as the administrative director of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Division of the DFPM.  The DFPM Medical Directors for CME programs are David Bourne, MD, MPH; Elton Cleveland, MD; Steven Strode, MD, MEd, MPH; Marybeth Curtis, RN, BSN; and Sandy Prince, MS, CHES.

The target audience for this course continues to be Family Physicians, Internists, and Pediatricians.  However, this course is considered beneficial for Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, CHES, as well as other health care professionals.  This year’s IRC attendance included 200 participants (153 of which were physicians) on the UAMS campus.  In addition to the 200 Little Rock attendees, there were 541 (for a total of 741) at the 27 operational distant learning sites including an additional room set up in Little Rock as an interactive site during the compressed video segment.  Total attendance for the entire conference including the three pre-conferences was 889 healthcare providers.

The 28th Annual IRC was reviewed and acceptable for up to 29.75 prescribed hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians and by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.  The Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for up to 29.75 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.  The Arkansas Nursing Association designates this educational activity for 35.7 contact hours.  Four of these CME hours were offered at no charge to over 27 accepting distant sites throughout Arkansas via compressed video.  The overall program evaluation score was 4.63 on a 5.0 as excellent scale and the overall speaker mean score was 4.58 on a 5.0 as excellent scale.
