The Department of Family & Preventive Medicine (DFPM),
Division of Continuing Medical Education (CME) held the 31st
Annual Family Medicine Intensive Review Course at the Jackson T. Stephens Spine
& Neurosciences Institute from May 28 – May 31, 2009 under the direction of
Allyson Cook, B.S. DFPM-CME’s primary goal is to offer quality CME programs to
primary care providers and other health care professionals across Arkansas and
has been providing continuing medical education programs for more than 19 years.
Over 21,000 health care professionals in Arkansas have been trained by DFPM-CME
year to date.
All course material and curricula were submitted and approved by the DFPM-CME
Medical Directors: Thomas Benton, M.D., Amanda Ferstl, and Pharm.D, Cynthia
Howington, A.P.N., C. Philip Hudson, M.D., and Kent McKelvey, Jr., M.D. All
programs received CME credits from the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Arkansas
Nurses Association, the Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy, the Arkansas
Office of Long Term Care, the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy and the Arkansas
Dietetic Association
The target audience for this course continues to be Family
Physicians, Internists, Pediatricians, and Ob Gyn Doctors. However, this course
is considered beneficial for Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered
Nurse Practitioners, Registered Dietitians, Physician Assistants, as well as
other health care professionals. This year’s main IRC attendance included 145 participants
on the UAMS campus. In addition to the 145 attendees in Little Rock, there were 70
attendees for the Pre-conference on May 28 and 176 attendees
at the 42
operational distant learning sites including an additional room set up in Little Rock
as an interactive site during the compressed video segment. Total attendance
for the entire conference was 391 healthcare providers.
The 31st
Annual IRC was reviewed and accepted for up to 25.5 prescribed hours
by the Office of Continuing Medical Education and designates this educational
activity for up to 25.5 hours in category 1
credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award the American Academy of
Family Physicians.Also the Arkansas Dietetic Association (ArDA Prior
Approval Number 271), the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy, the Arkansas State
Board of Physical Therapy, and the Arkansas Office of Long Term Care
(Approval ID# AR 4307-05319-25.5) and the Arkansas
Nursing Association designates this educational activity for 25.5
contact hours. Three (3) of these CME hours were offered at no charge to over

accepting distant sites throughout Arkansas via compressed video and the ADH
Bioterrorism network. The overall program evaluation score was 3.69 on a 4.0 as excellent scale and the overall speaker

12th Annual Family Medicine Update
October 10-11, 2008
The 12th Annual Family Medicine Update was held on the UAMS
Campus, on
October 10 - 11, 2008. The course was offered under the Department of
Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM) acting chairman, Daniel Knight, M.D. and
the administrative Continuing Medical Education (CME) Director Dawn Nichols.
the DFPM Medical Directors for CME programs are Thomas Benton, M.D., C. Philip
Hudson, M.D., Kent McKelvey, M.D., and Amanda Ferstl, PharmD.
The 12th Annual Family Medicine Update was reviewed and
acceptable for up to 12.75 prescribed hours by the American Academy of Family
Physicians and the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy. The Office of
continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for up to
12.75 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.
The Arkansas Nursing Association designates this educational activity for 12.75
contact hours. Three of these CME hours were offered at no charge to over
35 accepting distant sites throughout Arkansas via compressed video and the
Arkansas Department of Health Tandberg system.
The target audience for this course continues to be Family Physicians,
Internists, and Pediatricians. However, this course is considered
beneficial for Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse
Practitioners, Physicians Assistants, Certified Health Education Specialists as
well as other health care professionals.
This year's Family Medicine Update attendance included 52 participants
registered in Little Rock for the Friday session and 58 participants for the
Saturday session. three presentations with question and answer sessions
were offered free of charge to 35 operational distant learning sites across the
state. An additional 161 participants attended the interactive portion at
the 35 operational distant learning sites during the compressed video segment
(for a total of 213). Total attendance for the entire conference was 271.
The overall program evaluation score was 3.68 on a 4.0 as excellent scale and
the overall speaker mean score was 3.71 on a 4.0 as excellent scale.
The 12th Annual Family Medicine Update faculty included 13 UAMS physicians and 1
presenter from the Abraham Breast Clinic in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The DFPM CME Division generates revenue to assist with the expenses for this
program. Most of the DFPM expense is returned to other UAMS departments and
external catering. These returned expenses include staff salaries, UAMS
CME department charges, media services charges and printing services, UAMS
postal service mailing charges, housekeeping, and UAMS public safety and
parking.
In summary, the 12th Annual Family Medicine Update was a success in reaching
271 health care professionals.
30th Annual Family Practice
Intensive Review Course (IRC) Data
May 29 - June 1, 2008
The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM), Continuing Medical
Education (CME) held the 30th Annual Family Practice Intensive Review Course at
the Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute from May 29 - June 1,
2008 under the direction of Melissa Smith, B.A., B.S.E.D. DFPM CME programs are
offered to primary care providers and other health care professionals across
Arkansas and has been providing CME programs for more than 18 years. Over
18, 000 health care professionals in Arkansas have been trained by DFPM CME year
to date.
All course material and curricula were submitted and approved
by the DFPM-CME Medical Directors Thomas Benton, M.D.; Amanda Ferstl, Pharm.D.;
C. Philip Hudson, M.D.; Kent McKelvey, Jr., M.D.; and Steven Strode, M.D., Med,
MPH. All programs received CME credits from the American Academy of Family
Physicians, the Arkansas Nurses Association, the Arkansas State Medical Board,
the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the Arkansas Office
of Long Term Care, the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing,
Inc. and the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.
The target audience for this course continues to be Family Physicians,
Internists, and Pediatricians. However, this course is considered beneficial for
Pharmacists, Advanced Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician
Assistants, as well as other health care professionals. This year’s main IRC
attendance included 158 participants (117 of which were physicians) on the UAMS
campus. In addition to the 158 attendees in Little Rock, there were 115
attendees (59 of which were physicians) for the Pre-conferences on May 29 and
182 attendees (101 of which were physicians) at the 38 operational distant
learning sites including an additional room set up in Little Rock as an
interactive site during the compressed video segment. Total attendance for the
entire conference was 455 healthcare providers.
The 30th Annual IRC was reviewed and acceptable for up to 27.5
prescribed hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Arkansas
State Board of Pharmacy, the Arkansas State Medical Board, the Arkansas office
of Long Term Care and the National Commission for Health Education
Credentialing, Inc. Additionally, the Office of Continuing Medical Education
designates this educational activity for up to 27.5 hours in category 1 credit
towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. The Arkansas Nursing Association
designates this educational activity for 27.5 contact hours. Four of these CME
hours were offered at no charge to over 37 accepting distant sites throughout
Arkansas via compressed video and the ADH Bioterrorism network. The overall
program evaluation score was 4.59 on a 5.0 as excellent scale and the overall
speaker mean score was 4.55 on a 5.0 as excellent scale.
